VariCAD - F.A.Q.

1. On what platforms can VariCAD run?

VariCAD can run on PC's with either Windows (2000/XP/Vista) or Linux operating systems. The following distributions of Linux are supported: Debian, RedHat, Fedora Core, Mandrake and SuSE. (See the complete list of supported Linux distrubutions on our download page.)

2. What type of documentation is provided?

Both manual and tutorial are available either online, as a pdf file, or as a printed book Reference Manual & Tutorial.

3. Do I have to pay any regular or renewal fees?

No, there are neither hidden nor regular fees to be paid for using VariCAD. Once you purchase a VariCAD license, you can use it for an unlimited period of time.

4. What is the "One Year Upgrade"?

When you purchase a one-year upgrade, which also includes technical support, you are entitled to one full year of any and all VariCAD upgrades. After the one-year period, your software will still be fully functional, but will no longer accept upgrades. You can renew your subscription once a year at a reasonable price.
You can obtain upgrade versions from our website or by CD. When you want to upgrade, install the higher version on top of the current one.

5. How can I buy a licensed version of VariCAD?

Use our online service, the online store. You can either complete your purchase online by credit card or select another payment method.

6. How and when are new releases announced, and where are they available?

We announce new releases by posting press releases on our home page. Also, those who subscribe to our mailing list receive e-mail announcements on the day of a new version release.

7. What is the difference between the student and regular versions?

There are two differences between these versions. First, the price of the student version is lower. Second, commercial use of the student is prohibited. The regular version carries no such restrictions.

8. Can VariCAD also be used to develop commercial and residential architecture? Does VariCAD have libraries for civil engineering?

Because VariCAD is geared mainly toward mechanical engineering, there are limitations for developing architectural models, especially within 3D. The VariCAD package is not really geared toward civil engineering.

9. Does VariCAD work with any third-party applications for analysis, NC programming, etc.?

You can export BOM structure as ASCII, and import to and from CAPP files.

10. What files types can I import and export with VariCAD?

VariCAD files can be easily exported to other CAD systems and vice-versa. You can import STEP (3D), DWG (2D), DXF (2D) and IGES (2D) files, and export STEP (3D), STL (3D), IGES (3D and 2D), DWG (2D), DXF (2D). Our development team is constantly working to improve VariCAD compatibility with other systems.

11. I've noticed that 3D solids sometimes moved too slowly. What's happening?

Make sure that your hardware meets the recommended requirements. Hardware support of OpenGL is required for running VariCAD.
