3ds or obj files
I am getting into a couple of 3d graphics programs, (Carrara, Vue, Bryce) and they can render imported files, ie; Obj, 3ds, these 2 files seem to be the most prolific, but Varicad doesn't save/ export to these 2.
Are there any plans to add these files to Varicad's save as function to allow files to be imported into render program's ?
export to rendering software
Actually you can import VariCAD models into rendering programs. VariCAD curently saves 3D models in STEP, STL, IGES and DWB formats. You can use STL format, for instance, or convert other formats, depending on requirements of the particular program.
export to rendering software
Not a lot of external programs will import these files,
I have these programmes installed and you can see the common files they import

Vue 8 - dxf, 3ds, obj

Bryce7 pro - 3ds, obj,

Carrara7 pro - 3ds, obj, iges, step

Carrara 7 will also import the iges, and step format.
Kerkythea which is a dedicated rendering programme will also import 3ds, and obj files.
Blender which I don't have installed at the moment, (waiting for the new release) imports Dxf, and stl, as well as 3ds, obj.
So you can see that the common factor in a lot of 3d programmes is 3ds, and obj and not so much the other files that Varicad produces, so one of these formats added would be I believe would be a major advancement, especially for people who want to render their designs in Varicad.
model conversion software
Take a look at the Open Scene Graph software. One of the utilities is osgconvert, which can handle .stl files. It supports output to .obj ans .3ds. Best of all it's GPL.
